FA Youth Cup Match Report

F.A youth cup semi final first leg March 14th 2007

Emirates Stadium

Arsenal 1-0 Manchester United

Well Manchester United vs Arsenal for a £1, I just could not resist! The stadium is impressive and with a record attendance of 38, 187; impressive for a youth cup game the atmosphere was better than I expected but the gooners were still quiet!!

The first half was a lively half with only one major clear cut chance going the way of United’s Fabian Brandy setting up a potential tap in for Danny Welbeck, only for Arsenal’s Gavin Hoyt ( brother of Justin) to slide in and intercept. United playing in the blue kit played some neat attacking football but the passing at times was a little sloppy. Arsenal had no major chances either apart from a couple of long range efforts up and over. United’s and Arsenal’s defence was a little shaky at times but both teams escaped major harm during the first 45 minutes

The second half begins the way the first left off with United attacking with no goal to show for some good play. Then with United high up the field Arsenal break away for Kieron Kibbs to fire a stunning shot into the back of the net, suddenly the crowd began to awaken with 1-0 to the Arsenal echoeing around the ground. Now with an added sence of purpose Unied began to attack with no real efforts on goal untill a fantastic run by Daniel Gabrinth saw him 6 yards away from the goal to be swamped by 3 defenders. Then, in the dying seconds, Butcher was tested fully for the first time. Welbeck’s free-kick took a deflection but the keeper read the sudden change in direction and dived low to his right to tip the ball away. Seconds later the final whistle blew.

The return leg at OT will be an intresting game if it is anything like this one and I urge you to go and see the future of United for only £5 for adults and £2 for children.
